Popularly known for his Aponye Malls in downtown Kampala and Ntinda, which host the Mega Standard Supermarkets, prominent businessman, Apollo Nyegamehe alias 'Aponye', died on the spot the Thursday evening of July 6th, 2023, after the car in which he was traveling rammed into a stationary lorry along Mbarara-Kabale highway in Ntungamo District.

His son and driver were the two other occupants in the car, and they were rushed to Itojo Hospital for treatment in a very worrying critical condition. Reports say the business tycoon was on a voyage to attend a friend's burial ceremony in his home village.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, his company dominated the supply of relief supplies to millions of Ugandans, triggering a wave of criticism and controversial evaluations on the quality of his supplies and how he won the tender amidst a litany of suppliers that had earlier applied.

The low-profile business magnate was elected NRM chairman for Rukiga District and has been a remarkably vehement supporter of the ruling party/government until his last breath.
